Description

Torrefied Pellets represent the pinnacle of solid biomass fuel technology. Produced through a carefully controlled thermal treatment process called torrefaction — heating biomass to 200–300°C in an inert (oxygen-free) atmosphere — these pellets undergo a fundamental molecular transformation that makes them energy-dense, hydrophobic, and grindable, properties that standard biomass pellets simply cannot offer.

The torrefaction process removes up to 30% of the original mass while retaining over 90% of the energy content, resulting in an energy-dense product with calorific values of 5,000–5,500 kcal/kg — approaching sub-bituminous coal. More importantly, torrefied biomass can be pulverized in existing coal mills, making it a true drop-in fuel for pulverized coal (PC) boilers without any hardware modification.

Urja Mitra positions torrefied pellets as a strategic product for India’s power sector decarbonization pathway. As the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) mandates increasing biomass co-firing percentages in coal plants, torrefied pellets offer the most technically compatible and logistically practical solution for large-scale implementation.

Every batch of torrefied pellets supplied through Urja Mitra is accompanied by a complete quality dossier including proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, grindability index (HGI), and energy content reports from NABL-accredited laboratories — ensuring power plant operators can plan fuel blending ratios with full confidence.
