Black Pellets are an advanced generation of biomass fuel produced through a steam explosion or mild torrefaction treatment process that fundamentally transforms the physical and chemical properties of conventional wood or biomass pellets. The heat treatment partially degrades the hemicellulose in the biomass, resulting in a hydrophobic, dense, dark-colored pellet that closely resembles coal in handling characteristics.

 

The most significant advantage of black pellets over white wood pellets is their hydrophobicity — the water-resistant surface means they can be stored in open-air conditions or transported without moisture uptake, which is a critical limitation of conventional wood pellets. This allows coal power plants to handle black pellets using their existing coal infrastructure — conveyors, crushers, silos, and burners — with minimal modifications.
